Arizona State has a surprising four-shot lead over host Georgia Tech after the first round of the NCAA Championship.
Led by freshman Jon Rahm’s 9-under 61, the Sun Devils shot 10-under 270 on Tuesday at Capital City Club’s Crabapple Course outside Atlanta.
Pre-tournament favorites Alabama (-5) and Cal (-3) are also in the mix, along with Illinois (-4).
Rahm has a four-shot lead over Oklahoma senior Abraham Ancer in the individual race. Both players shot the low rounds of the day in the morning wave, when conditions were benign.
The two biggest Day 1 surprises were third-ranked UCLA (289) and No. 5 New Mexico (292), which sit 23rd and T-27, respectively, in the 30-team field.
The top eight teams after three days of stroke play will advance to the match-play portion of the championship. The individual champion is crowned Thursday.
